What This Tool Does
A .tar.xz file is a TAR archive compressed with XZ, one of the strongest widely used compression formats. It is often the default packaging format for Linux kernels and many distributions. This tool decompresses the XZ layer, reads the TAR inside, and rebuilds the content as a standard ZIP archive.
The result opens natively on any operating system, which makes it easy to move a large Linux source bundle onto a Windows machine or a mobile device.
How It Works
The XZ stream is inflated to retrieve the TAR container, then the TAR entries are unpacked and written into a fresh ZIP. Folders and file contents are preserved, and the finished ZIP is tested again so you always download a valid archive.
Step by Step
- 1
Upload the .tar.xz file.
- 2
Click Convert to ZIP.
- 3
Wait while both compression layers are handled.
- 4
Download your ZIP with the folder tree intact.
Compatibility
- Input: TAR compressed with XZ (.tar.xz, .txz).
- Output: a standard ZIP archive (.zip) preserving folders.
- The strong compression of XZ means the uploaded file may be much smaller than the ZIP result.
Troubleshooting
- Inputs that do not decode as XZ are rejected with a clear message.
- Corrupted streams stop with an honest error.
- Kernel sources and huge bundles take longer; keep the tab open until download is ready.
