What This Tool Does
This tool converts a TAR archive into a 7Z archive. A TAR is normally uncompressed, so repacking it as 7Z with LZMA typically shrinks the file size noticeably. Every entry is extracted and recompressed as a genuine 7Z.
The output opens in any 7Z reader and the conversion summary shows how the sizes compare.
How It Works
The TAR entries are decompressed from the archive container and each is written into a new 7Z using LZMA compression. The finished 7Z is reopened to verify it, then the download link is shown.
Step by Step
- 1
Upload the TAR archive.
- 2
Click Convert to 7Z.
- 3
Wait for the LZMA compression pass.
- 4
Download your 7Z archive.
Compatibility
- Plain TAR archives are supported by the extraction engine.
- The 7Z output uses LZMA and reads in standard tools.
- Files inside are kept byte for byte identical after round-trip.
Troubleshooting
- Files that are not TAR are rejected before conversion.
- Compression gains depend on content; media-heavy archives may shrink little.
- For a compressed TAR delivery, combining this with ZIP is a common pattern.
