What This Tool Does
This tool takes a standard ZIP archive, reads every file inside it, and produces a TAR archive that contains exactly the same files and folders. TAR is the container format most commonly used on Unix systems and inside development pipelines, so converting to TAR is useful whenever you need to hand an archive to a tool that expects the TAR layout rather than the ZIP layout.
This is a real conversion, not a file rename. The ZIP is fully extracted and a brand-new TAR is written from the extracted contents, so the output is a genuine TAR-format archive that other software can open with confidence.
How the Conversion Works
ZIP and TAR are different container formats. A ZIP stores files in compressed form with a central directory at the end; a TAR stores files sequentially in 512-byte blocks with a header per file. To convert between them the archive must be unpacked and then repacked, which is exactly what this tool does on the server.
Every file and folder inside your ZIP is written into the new TAR, with the folder structure preserved. When the TAR is finished it is opened again to confirm the entries are readable before a download link is issued.
Step by Step
- 1
Upload your ZIP archive using the drop zone or the Browse Files button.
- 2
Click Convert to TAR to start the real extraction and repackaging.
- 3
Wait while the archive is extracted and the new TAR is built and verified.
- 4
Download your ready-to-use TAR archive.
Compatibility
- Input: any readable ZIP archive (.zip).
- Output: a standard TAR archive (.tar) readable by tar, WinRAR, 7-Zip and most operating systems.
- Folder structure inside the ZIP is preserved in the TAR output.
Security and Privacy
Your file is processed on the server inside an isolated temporary folder and deleted after the conversion finishes or shortly after download. No conversion is performed through any third-party service, and no file contents are inspected beyond what is needed to read the archive.
Troubleshooting
- Make sure the file you upload is genuinely a ZIP archive. A renamed file with a different format will be rejected honestly.
- Password-protected ZIP archives cannot be converted without the correct password.
- Very large archives take longer to extract and repack; keep the connection open until the download button appears.
