What This Tool Does
BZIP2 compresses a single data stream and is common for software packages and large text files because of its strong compression. This tool decompresses the .bz2 stream and wraps the recovered data into a ZIP archive that any computer can open.
When the decompressed data turns out to be a TAR archive, the tool expands the TAR and packs its files and folders into the ZIP, so the output is genuinely useful rather than a single unfamiliar blob.
How It Works
The .bz2 stream is decompressed on the server with the bzip2 library available to this platform. The resulting bytes are examined to decide how best to package them: a single file is stored under its original name, and a TAR payload is unpacked and converted entry by entry into a ZIP.
Step by Step
- 1
Upload the .bz2 file.
- 2
Click Convert to ZIP.
- 3
Wait for the decompression and packaging.
- 4
Download your ZIP file.
Compatibility
- Input: a BZIP2-compressed stream (.bz2, .bz) or a compressed TAR (.tbz, .tbz2).
- Output: a standard ZIP archive (.zip).
- Folder structure of TAR payloads is preserved.
Troubleshooting
- Inputs that are not valid bzip2 data produce an explicit error.
- Truncated files are reported as unreadable rather than faked.
- Allow extra time for large streams; the conversion runs fully before download.
