What Is a JAR File?
A JAR (Java Archive) file is a package that bundles compiled Java classes, resources, images and other assets into a single distributable file. JAR files are built using a ZIP-based structure, which means they can technically be opened like archives but only if the contents are treated carefully.
Our tool lets you inspect and extract the contents of a JAR file safely, without needing to run it.
How JAR Extraction Works
Because a JAR is ZIP-based, we read it with a ZIP engine. We validate the archive, inspect its structure, and extract every entry while preserving the internal directory hierarchy. The extracted contents are then delivered to you as a standard ZIP file.
JAR files are treated as untrusted archives, so the same strict security checks that protect ZIP extraction apply here too.
Why Extract a JAR File?
- To inspect the contents of a Java application or library.
- To review bundled resources, configuration files or documentation.
- To recover individual files from a JAR without installing Java.
- To learn about how a particular project packages itself.
Step-by-Step Instructions
- 1
Upload your JAR file using the Browse Files button.
- 2
Click Extract JAR.
- 3
Wait while the contents are extracted securely.
- 4
Download the ZIP with the extracted files.
Security
We treat every JAR file as untrusted. Extraction happens in an isolated temporary folder, unsafe path entries are blocked, and strict limits prevent oversized or excessive extractions. Your uploaded file and all extracted data are permanently removed after your download.
